A new year is a good excuse to pick a fresh planner or journal. The hard part is choosing one you will still open in March. Most people do not quit planning because they lack discipline. They quit because the layout does not match how their week really works.

We went through the planners, journals and supplies that readers ask about most and kept the ones with strong, long-running reviews. Below you will find 10 picks for 2027, grouped by how you like to plan, plus a short checklist to help you choose.

  • Do you plan by day or by week? If your days are full of meetings, classes or appointments, you need a daily page or a weekly spread with time slots. If you mainly track a few priorities, a simple weekly layout is enough.
  • Dated or undated? A dated planner saves time because the calendar is already filled in. An undated one lets you start any month and skip weeks without wasting pages.
  • Where will it live? A large 8.5 x 11 planner is great on a desk. If it travels in a bag every day, an A5 size is lighter and more likely to come with you.

Best planners for goals and weekly planning

These three are for people who want structure: yearly goals at the front, then weekly pages to turn those goals into tasks.

1. Clever Fox Planner PRO (undated, 8.5 x 11)

This is one of the most popular goal planners on Amazon, with more than 11,000 reviews. It starts with pages for your vision and your short and long-term goals in each area of life, then moves into weekly spreads. Because it is undated, you can start it in January or in the middle of February without losing pages. The large size works best for people who plan at a desk. Check the Clever Fox Planner PRO on Amazon

2. Legend Planner (undated, A5)

The Legend Planner mixes goal setting with weekly double-page spreads, space for daily tasks and priorities, a daily habit tracker and monthly progress reviews. It is a smaller A5 size, so it fits in most bags. It suits people who like checking off habits as much as tasks, and it has a huge number of reviews (over 25,000). See the Legend Planner on Amazon

3. Forvencer 2027 Planner (dated, hardcover)

If you would rather not write dates by hand, a dated planner is the simple choice. This one covers January to December 2027 with monthly and weekly pages, plus three extra monthly pages for the end of 2026, so you can start using it before New Year. It has a hard cover with metal corner guards and a yearly goals page at the front. Look at the Forvencer 2027 Planner on Amazon

Prefer something you can print at home? Our 2027 Goal Planner & Year Review Workbook walks you through reviewing 2026 and setting a few clear goals for 2027, and you can print only the pages you need.

Best guided journals for reflection

A guided journal gives you a question or a short structure, so you never face a blank page. These are good picks if you want a small daily writing habit that takes a few minutes.

4. The Five Minute Journal

This classic has a simple routine: a few lines in the morning (what you are grateful for and what would make the day good) and a few lines at night. It is beginner friendly and takes very little time, which is why many people keep using it. Find The Five Minute Journal on Amazon

5. Q&A a Day: 5-Year Journal

Each page has one question for one day of the year, with room to answer it five times, once per year. After the first year you start reading your old answers before you write the new one, which is a fun way to see how your thinking changes. Each answer is only a couple of lines, so it fits even very busy days. Get Q&A a Day on Amazon

6. Start Where You Are by Meera Lee Patel

This illustrated journal mixes quotes, prompts and creative exercises for getting to know yourself better. It has no dates, so you can open it whenever you feel like writing. It suits creative people who want something a bit more playful than a planner. See Start Where You Are on Amazon

7. Leuchtturm1917 Dotted Notebook (A5)

If no ready-made layout ever feels right, make your own. A dotted notebook is the favorite base for bullet journals because the dots guide your lines without getting in the way. The Leuchtturm1917 A5 has a hard cover and is one of the best-rated notebooks of its kind, with a 4.8-star average. Use it for monthly logs, weekly spreads, habit trackers and lists, all in one place. Check the Leuchtturm1917 notebook on Amazon

Pens and highlighters that make planning easier

9. Zebra Mildliner Highlighters

These dual-tip highlighters have a broad chisel tip and a fine tip, in soft colors that are designed to minimize bleed-through on thin paper. Use one color per area of life (work, home, health) and your week becomes easy to read at a glance. See Zebra Mildliners on Amazon

10. Sakura Pigma Micron Fineliners

A set of black fineliners in different point sizes, with archival, waterproof ink. They are popular for drawing bullet journal layouts and headers with clean lines. Find Sakura Pigma Micron pens on Amazon

How to make your new planner stick

  1. Set it up before January 1. Fill in birthdays, bills and known trips in late December, so the planner already feels useful on day one.
  2. Pick a planning time. Ten minutes on Sunday evening for the week and two minutes each morning for the day is enough for most people.
  3. Keep goals few. Three goals for the year are easier to follow than ten. Write them on the first page and look at them every week.
  4. Track one or two habits. A small tracker is motivating. A page with fifteen habits usually gets abandoned. Our Habit Tracker Printable Pack has undated trackers you can start any month.
  5. Do a monthly review. At the end of each month, look at what worked and what did not, then adjust. Small changes add up, as we explain in The 2% Improvement Rule.

If you want the goal planner and the habit tracker together, the 2027 Fresh Start Bundle includes both printables for less than buying them separately.

Frequently asked questions

Is a dated or undated planner better?

It depends on how steady your routine is. A dated planner is faster to use and good for busy calendars. An undated planner is better if you often skip weeks or want to start in the middle of the year, because you never waste pages.

When should I buy a planner for 2027?

October to early December is a good time. Popular planners can sell out in late December, and starting a few weeks early gives you time to set it up calmly before the new year.

Can a journal replace a planner?

For some people, yes. A dotted notebook can hold your calendar, tasks and reflections in one place. If you want ready-made structure, though, a planner for scheduling and a small guided journal for reflection often work better together.
